The Hard Clam
The Hard Clam, a part of the Bivalves in the Mollusca Phylum, have a very interesting nervous system. This particular species has no brain; they have a network of nerves and a continuation of paired ganglia. The cerebral ganglia controls all of the sensory organs and is able to react from different stimulants. The senses of clams are not well developed as they are mainly located on posterior mantle margins. Statocysts (balance sensory receptors) in the organisms help the bivalves to sense and correct its structuring. Each statocyst has a small sac lined with sensory cilia that detects the movement of a mineral mass, and a statolith.
