The Tedania ignis sponge, or fire sponge, is one of many species of sponges. This specific species is found in the coastal waters of the Caribbean and Western Atlantic. The reason for the name Fire Sponge is because when it is touched by something it gives the organism that touched it a burning and rash sensation. The sponge also turns red when it is touched. Since poriferans in general lack a nervous system it is speculated that the larvae of Fire Sponges are capable of perceiving light in order to find where to settle in the ocean.
